Time Budgets and Behavior of Nesting Bald
نویسندگان
چکیده
Time budgets for adult Bald Eagle (Haliaeetus leucocephalus) activities at nests were documented from mid-incubation to fledging at one nest and from hatching into the postfledging period at two nests. Time-lapse cameras recorded instantaneous samples of activity at 90 second intervals. Both sexes incubated eggs and brooded young. Eggs were incubated for 95% of daylight hours, with the female and male contributing 53% and 42% respectively. Total brooding time averaged 79% of each day 1-10 days after hatching and declined to 6% of each day 41-50 days after hatching. Both sexes delivered prey and the frequency of prey deliveries did not vary with the age or number of young in the nest. Females fed young 81-91% of the time and the number of feedings increased with the number of young in the nest. Weather variables had significant impact on nearly all nesting activities. Incubating and brooding rates increased with wind velocity and decreased with daily high temperature. Brooding rates also increased with daily precipitation and decreased with sunniness. Females tended to incubate and brood more and males less during periods of cold, wet, windy and cloudy weather. Prey delivery rates decreased with precipitation and feedings decreased with daily high temperature. Comparisons with other raptor species indicate that Bald Eagles share nesting duties between the sexes more than many birds of prey. Recommendations for minimizing human disturbance during the nesting cycle and the possible role of reversed sexual dimorphism in determining sex role differentiation are discussed.

Seasonal Timing of Bald Eagle Attendance and Influence on Activity Budgets of Glaucous-winged Gulls in Barkley Sound, British Columbia
— As raptor populations recover following the banning of organochlorine pesticide use, there may be consequences for prey populations. While Bald Eagles ( Haliaeetus leucocephalus ) actively prey on Glaucous-winged Gulls and their offspring ( Larus glaucescens ), their presence at colonies and roost sites may also influence reproductive success of gulls by impacting activity budgets. Here we in...
متن کاملForaging-related Activity of Bald Eagles at a Washington Seabird Colony and Seal Rookery
—From 1980 to 1998, Washington’s Bald Eagle (Haliaeetus leucocephalus) population increased at an annual rate of 10%. Over the same time period, foraging activity of Bald Eagles at marine bird breeding colonies also increased. From 1993 to 2008, we observed foraging-related behavior of Bald Eagles on Violet Point, Protection Island. This island hosts more than 70% of the breeding seabirds in Wa...
متن کاملReproductive Success of Bald Eagles in Interior Alaska
We compared productivity and nesting success of 2 adjacent populations of bald eagles (Haliaeetus leztcocephalus) near the northern limits of their range in interior Alaska during 1989-94. Productivity (f 2 SE young fledgedloccupied territory) and nesting success differed between populations; pairs in the Gulkana River basin had higher productivity (0.86 2 0.05, n = 274) and nesting success (59...

متن کاملAssociations between regional differences in polychlorinated biphenyls and dichlorodiphenyldichloroethylene in blood of nestling bald eagles and reproductive productivity.
The relationship between regional reproduction rates of bald eagles (Haliaeetus leucocephalus) and concentrations of p.p'-dichlorodiphenyldichloroethylene (p,p'-DDE) and total polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) in blood plasma from nestling bald eagles was assessed. Blood was analyzed from 309 nestlings from 10 subpopulations of eagles across the Great Lakes region. Geometric mean concentrations ...
